Dr. Hernandez joined Sul Ross State University June of 2022 as interim President and was named the 14th President by the Texas State University System Board of Regents at their November 2022 meeting.
Dr. Hernandez has over 37 years of Public Higher Education experience having served The University of Texas at El Paso, University of North Texas System, Sam Houston State University and now Sul Ross State University – serving five universities within three systems in Texas.
He has served in various capacities, starting as a staff accountant and working his way up to President. He is a dynamic higher education leader with extensive experience in strategic planning, financial stewardship, and institutional growth. He has a proven track record of increasing enrollment, securing funding, and enhancing operational efficiency, fostering partnerships, developing academic programs, and advancing university missions. His expertise in financial management, compliance, and higher education governance are rooted in his extensive administrative experience.
His service includes work on a variety of national, state and institutional organizations and committees in diverse areas encompassing administrative and financial policy. He has also served the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a peer reviewer conducting both on-site and off-site reviews for several Universities.
Dr. Hernandez attended the University of Texas at El Paso, where he earned a BBA in Accounting, a Master of Education and a Doctorate of Education. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
